Il film narra le vicende che avvengono all'interno del Grand Hotel Excelsior diretto dall'eclettico Taddeus (Adriano
Celentano), pronipote del grande Zaccarias, che lui venera come un santo. Alle sue dipendenze è Egisto Costanzi
(Enrico Montesano), vedovo, che fa credere alla figlia Adelina di essere un nobile per non deluderla; quando la figlia
arriverà all'albergo di ritorno dal collegio svizzero dove studia, Egisto dovrà allestire una vera e
propria messinscena per non far scoprire la verità ad Adelina. Più tardi arriva il pugile coatto Pericle
Coccia (Carlo Verdone) con il suo manager Bertolazzi (Armando Brancia): egli deve combattere per un incontro importante,
ma preferisce mangiare e guardare le cameriere piuttosto che allenarsi. C'è poi anche la signorina Vivaldi
(Eleonora Giorgi) che è da anni cliente dell'albergo ed innamorata di Taddeus, e il grande mago di Segrate (Diego
Abatantuono) che è in realtà solo un mistificatore ma che alla fine si produrrà in una vera
levitazione.
